Similarities and Differences Between Fruit Displays at Various Grocery Stores
Location - Publix, Walmart, and Target in Lakewood Ranch, FL
Date - July 5, 2025 and July 6, 2025
Publix:
Walmart:
Target:
Similarities:
- Bananas had their own stand in each store
- Each store had many different types of apples
- Fruits tended to be grouped by similarities (e.g., melons together, berries together, etc.)
- The produce section was near the front of the store
- Fruits were displayed in open-air stands (i.e., not in shelving, making it easy to see the bright colors of large quantities of fruit)
Differences:
- Target had a prominent "picks of summer" section, while the other two's seasonal sections were much less pronounced
- Watermelon was in the front of Walmart, but not displayed prominently in Publix and Target
- The prices in Walmart were displayed in huge letters, while the other stores displayed prices in much smaller font
- Walmart grouped apples, peaches, and plums in the same section, while Target and Publix kept apples in their own section
- Publix and Walmart had prominent prepared/cut fruit sections, while Target's was not a focal point
